Pre-Surgical/Procedure Instructions

Please read and follow the steps outlined below to prepare your pet for surgery.  Let us know if you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them.

  • No food or treats after 11 pm the night before surgery.
  • Water can be left available for your pet unless directed otherwise.

Surgical and Dental Information

  • Surgical preparation – The hair surrounding the surgical area will be clipped and the skin will be scrubbed with an antiseptic. Sterilized equipment will be used and surgery personnel will antiseptically scrub and wear gloves, masks, gowns, and caps.
  • An intravenous catheter may be placed for the administration of fluids. A small area will be shaved on the front legs to facilitate this.
  • A trained technician or doctor will monitor your pet throughout the entire procedure.
  • Pain medication will be given to ensure your pet’s comfort.
  • During dental procedures, full mouth radiographs will be taken and all surfaces of each tooth will be scaled to remove plaque and tartar, as well as probed for pockets or problems along the gumline to allow a thorough evaluation of all teeth. The teeth will then be charted in the medical record to facilitate future evaluation. Once done, all teeth are polished and a fluoride treatment is applied. Patients also receive an oral laser therapy treatment to reduce inflammation and promote healing.

Post-surgical care

After the anesthetic procedure, your pet will be monitored closely throughout their hospital stay.

At the pick-up appointment, a technician will meet with you to discuss and answer questions about post-procedure home care, including instructions for any necessary medications, and schedule any needed follow-up.
